Money is the resource teams track in a deal. In the Academy of Business Negotiations Basics module, the Four Resources lesson makes a harder point. Every negotiation also spends time, energy, and emotional investment. If you only count dollars, you can secure better terms and still weaken your overall position. Treat those four currencies as the real budget for the conversation.
Time and energy have a cost
Preparation, multiple rounds, and stalled follow ups consume hours you cannot spend on another account. That is a real cost, including opportunity cost. Energy is the less visible cousin. Negotiation requires focus, emotional regulation, and creative problem solving. A high stakes conversation when you are depleted produces weaker listening and faster concessions. Schedule important calls when you are sharp. Be intentional about how much time a stuck deal still deserves, and stop treating endless back and forth as free.
Money is obvious. Emotion is not.
Direct financial commitments are easy to see: price cuts, promotional funding, travel, extra inventory. Emotional investment is the sneaky one. The more you want a specific outcome, the easier it is to rationalize a concession you have not fully analyzed. That is how teams over disclose, agree too quickly, or keep pouring resources into a deal that is no longer worth it. Wanting the relationship is fine. Letting want replace math is not.
Protect the position
The operating rule is simple: do not take an action that worsens your position. Know the target in profit dollars before you start. Keep alternative paths to that target so you can stay flexible on the form of the deal. If the conversation is draining time, energy, money, or composure faster than the value it can return, pause and reassess. Improve the terms, change the structure, or decide the deal is not worth it. Commit resources on purpose, not because the other side keeps the clock running.
The practical takeaway: Track all four resources in the deal, and stop spending the ones that no longer improve your profit dollar position.
