Four Resources Every Negotiation Spends

A price move is only one cost of a negotiation. In the Basics module, the lesson on four resources treats time, energy, money, and emotional investment as the currencies you spend each time you sit down to deal. Track only the dollars and you can improve a term while the overall position gets worse.

Time and energy

Time covers preparation, the rounds of back-and-forth, and the work you are not doing while this conversation stays open. Energy is the focus and self-control a hard call requires. High-stakes talks are draining. Put the material conversation on the calendar when you are sharp, not when you are depleted. A tired negotiator often gives ground to end the meeting. That is not the same as a trade that improves profit dollars.

Money and emotional investment

Money is the visible spend: concessions, price reductions, promotional funding, travel, and outside help. Emotional investment is harder to see. The more attached you are to a specific outcome, the easier it becomes to justify a term you have not fully priced. Caring about the relationship is useful. Needing this one deal to close is expensive. When the attachment rises, slow the concession and return to the numbers.

Spend them on purpose

Before the next round, write down what each resource has already cost. Then test the next move. Does it improve your position, or does it only relieve pressure? A longer payment term that burns a week of senior time and strains the account may not be worth the cash it frees. A smaller money concession that keeps energy available for a larger renewal can be the better trade. If the deal is costing more in any of these four currencies than the profit dollars it can return, pause and redesign the trade before you agree. Run the choice through absolute profit dollars, after all four costs, not through the relief of getting the email sent.

Takeaway: Before you concede, check time, energy, money, and emotional investment, and skip any move that leaves the position worse.
