If I Get X, I Can Do Y for You

Picture painting is how you drive a change instead of waiting for the other side to invent a reason to give it to you. You describe a specific future that only becomes real if the deal is structured the way you need. The working line is simple: if I get X, I can do Y for you.

Make the future concrete

Saying we could grow your business gives them nothing to approve. A picture has a mechanism and a result they can check.

When I was at Spreetail, we were working to bring Cold Steel Knives into the book. A catalog discount in the 3 to 5 percent range penciled out to roughly thirty thousand to fifty thousand dollars a year. We needed closer to a 20 percent discount to compete on the SKUs that mattered. At that cost, the same traffic and conversion math pointed to more than five hundred thousand dollars in first-year sales.

I did not lead with the discount. I led with the volume they would gain if the cost worked: competitive online selling and real spend behind the brand. Year one cleared more than five hundred thousand dollars. Year two cleared more than one million dollars.

Tie the ask to a need they already have

A counterpart funds a picture that solves a problem already on their list. Velocity. A category they are behind in. A launch that needs a partner who can move units. Name that need, then show the path from your ask to their result.

If the cost works, you can sell at a level that converts and put traffic behind the SKU. If it does not, those units stay theoretical, and both sides leave the volume uncaptured.

Only paint what you can deliver

A future you cannot hit becomes a credibility problem the next time you need a yes. Use numbers you can defend: historical sell-through, current traffic, conversion at a stated selling point, and the units you would add. Then stop. Stretching the story to close today’s conversation taxes every conversation after it.

Takeaway: Before the ask, write one sentence you can defend: if I get X, I can do Y for you.
