Strong preparation still fails when you aim at the wrong priority. In the Academy of Business Negotiations Daily Tactics module, the first move is value validation: confirm what your counterpart actually values in this conversation before you anchor, trade, or present a package.
Priorities shift. The buyer who pressed on cost last cycle may now care more about fill rate, inventory certainty, or a clean launch window. If your offer is built around last year’s pressure, it can land flat even when the math is sound.
Ask before you assume
Open with direct, low-friction questions. “What would a strong outcome look like for your team from this conversation?” “What matters most in this renewal?” “If you could change one thing about how we work together, what would it be?” These are not traps. They tell you where to put your energy and which dollars to protect first.
Reflect it back and lock it in
Hearing an answer is not enough. Reflect it in plain language and get confirmation. “Just to confirm, inventory certainty matters more than pricing flexibility right now. Is that accurate?” When they agree, you have validated the value. Now every ask, concession, and trade can be framed against that confirmed need instead of a guess.
Negotiate to the confirmed need
Once the priority is locked, structure the conversation around it. If certainty is the real need, lead with allocation, lead times, and service levels, then connect cost moves to that outcome. If growth is the need, lead with volume, assortment, and support. Value validation takes a few minutes at the front of a call and can spare you an hour of arguing the wrong point.
Practical takeaway: Confirm what they value, get them to own it, then negotiate the package that serves that need in profit dollars.
