What Signal Says the Leverage Just Shifted?

Leverage does not stay put from the opening call to the close. ABN treats it as a moving condition inside one deal, not a fixed label you assign before you sit down. Operators who notice the shift and act while it is still fresh tend to improve absolute profit dollars, while those who keep the original plan often miss the window.

Listen for the tell

A few signals show up when the balance moves toward you. Your counterpart starts closing the timeline. They were content to let the conversation drift, and now they want a decision this week. Urgency on their side is information. You can ask what changed, or you can let the clock work and see what they offer to finish faster. They also start making offers. If they were only reacting and now they propose terms unprompted, their need has likely grown, or their alternatives have gotten worse. Tone shifts too. Confident becomes conciliatory. Casual becomes urgent. People telegraph internal pressure more often than they intend.

New facts are the practical trigger

The clearest shift is new information, often dropped in passing. In a first-buy conversation with Yeti, the opening position was thin. They were content with existing retail partners and were treating a third-party seller as a backup. Partway through, they mentioned supply trouble with a major account and concern about that relationship over the longer term. That aside changed the picture. The ask moved from a polite request for consideration to an aggressive first buy that showed the seller could be more than a spare option. If nobody had been listening, the original plan would have stayed in place and the better position would have passed.

Use it while it is still live

You do not bank a leverage shift and spend it next quarter. It is perishable. When the signal appears, pause, reassess, and adjust before the conversation moves on. Sharpen the ask. Change the sequence. Push for the concession you had been holding. Waiting for a cleaner moment is how a live advantage turns into a story you tell later.

Takeaway: When timeline, offers, tone, or new facts move, treat that as a leverage shift and act in the same conversation.
