Which Basic Need Is Driving Their Pushback?

A counterpart can reject a sound commercial offer and still be acting rationally. ABN treats basic human needs as the layer under stated interests. When a proposal presses security, economic well-being, belonging, recognition, or control, the person across the table often stops weighing the trade and starts protecting themselves.

Five needs that change the room

Security covers professional and financial safety. A clause that looks like it could put a job at risk draws a hard no, even when the spreadsheet is clean. Economic well-being is the longer view. They need to believe the deal will not hollow out their profit dollars over the next few cycles. Belonging is whether they feel like a partner in the decision or like someone being managed around. Recognition is being acknowledged, not flattered. Control is agency. Remove their choices and they will resist a term that would have helped both sides.

The stated position is a clue

People rarely announce that a proposal threatens their standing with a boss. They say the price is off, the term is nonstandard, or another team will not sign. Treat that position as a signal. Ask what a workable version would need to protect for their side. If the answer points to job safety, cash predictability, a seat in the rollout, credit for the result, or a choice they can explain upward, you have found the need under the ask. Price talk is often the costume. The need is what actually blocks the trade.

Protect the need, then revisit the term

You do not have to grant the original concession to lower the barrier. Build a path that keeps the need intact and still moves absolute profit dollars. A phased volume commitment can protect security better than a surprise cutover. A shared scorecard can give recognition without giving away margin. Two acceptable structures can restore control while you hold the target. Once the person feels the need is covered, the commercial term is easier to reopen.

Takeaway: Before you tighten an ask, name which basic need the proposal may be pressing, and adjust the path so that need stays intact.
